About NeVar

In the future this website's mascot and spokes-raven, NeVar, will tell stories about the Mt. Tom Range, particularly the Mt. Tom Area.

Ravens have been followers of our kind longer than recorded history and are a rich part of our folklore. To Indigenous Americans ravens are revered noble spirits: intelligent, adaptable, sociable.

And so the common raven was chosen to tell the story of the Mt. Tom Range and why the ridge that makes up the spine of Holyoke, Massachusetts, should be preserved largely as undeveloped open space.

Warming Hut

Warming Hut, 7-27-11Looking out over Lake Bray is the Warming Hut, a throwback name dating from the original hut when ice skating and fishing was and still are popular. When ice conditions allow a rink is plowed for groups to play hockey or just skate about. In the warm months the area around is ideal for picnics and play. Across nearby Cascade Brook is parking and a popular starting point for hikes. Close by is a Kiosk highlighting facts about animals, birds, and has a trail map box. The hut remains open year round. Bathrooms too.
